Education is Freedom

“What is the fruit of these teachings? Only the most beautiful and proper harvest of the truly educated—tranquility, fearlessness, and freedom. We should not trust the masses who say only the free can be educated, but rather the lovers of wisdom who say that only the educated are free.”
—EPICTETUS, DISCOURSES

From the book "The Daily Stoic":

Why did you pick up this book? Why pick up any book? Not to seem smarter, not to pass time on the
plane, not to hear what you want to hear—there are plenty of easier choices than reading.
No, you picked up this book because you are learning how to live. Because you want to be freer, fear
less, and achieve a state of peace. Education—reading and meditating on the wisdom of great minds—is not to be done for its own sake. It has a purpose.
Remember that imperative on the days you start to feel distracted, when watching television or having a snack seems like a better use of your time than reading or studying philosophy. Knowledge—selfknowledge in particular—is freedom.

To become wiser day by day, read great books daily and acquire the worldly wisdom.

I wish everyone, a happy new year(2018) and hope that you will take resolution of reading in the new year.

Thanks,
Mahesh

Be ruthless to the things that don't matter

If we follow philosophy and apply them in day to day life then we can save yourself from many unnecessary and unimportant problems and people.

“How many have laid waste to your life when you weren’t aware of what you were losing, how much was wasted in pointless grief, foolish joy, greedy desire, and social amusements—how little of your own was left to you. You will realize you are dying before your time!”

—SENECA, ON THE BREVITY OF LIFE

The  below lines from the book "The Daily Stoic" from Ryan Holiday may help you to understand the value of "NO":

"One of the hardest things to do in life is to say “No.” To invitations, to requests, to obligations, to the stuff that everyone else is doing. Even harder is saying no to certain time-consuming emotions: anger, excitement, distraction, obsession, lust. None of these impulses feels like a big deal by itself, but run amok, they become a commitment like anything else. If you’re not careful, these are precisely the impositions that will overwhelm and consume your life. Do you ever wonder how you can get some of your time back, how you can feel less busy? Start by learning the power of “No!”—as in “No, thank you,” and “No, I’m not going to get caught up in that,” and “No, I just can’t right now.” It may hurt some feelings. It may turn people off. It may take some hard work. But the more you say no to the things that don’t matter, the more you can say yes to the things that do. This will let you live and enjoy your life—the life that you want."

So my friend, if you want the life that you really want to live then start saying NO to useless things and people.

Thanks,
Mahesh

Control and Choice

Hi,

I started reading the book :

The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living: Featuring new translations of Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius By Ryan Holiday

This book is very interesting and philosophical and have a vast knowledge on every aspect of life. I think most of the question will be answered by the book. I suggest a must read.

The first lesson from the book is on the "Control and Choice". Control and choice meaning, we should only think about the things that are in  our control and stop worrying about the things that are not in our control, so we have only our choices in our control and not the out come, so only think about the choice not the result.

“The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly tomyself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices Iactually control. Where then do I look for good and evil? Not to uncontrollable externals, butwithin myself to the choices that are my own . . .”—EPICTETUS, DISCOURSES,

From the book, i have taken the below phrase:

The single most important practice in Stoic philosophy is differentiating between what we can change and what we can’t. What we have influence over and what we do not. A flight is delayed because of weather—no amount of yelling at an airline representative will end a storm. No amount of wishing will make you taller or shorter or born in a different country. No matter how hard you try, you can’t make someone like you. And on top of that, time spent hurling yourself at these immovable objects is time not spent on the things we can change.

As in Bhagavad Gita Lord Shree Krishna said "karmanye vadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana"

So, We should only think about the Karma(Right Karma), and leave the result.

have a nice day and keep learning.

Mistakes : In Life & in Stock market

Hi,

I started reading and analyzing about market 2 years back and committed many mistakes and learned many lessons from them. In this post, i am going to shares some mistakes out of many. As said "We should learn from our's as well as from other's mistakes, so we will take the wise decisions in life and in investing."

As Sir Isaac Newton said:

"If i have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants"

The above quote is more meaningful for reading voraciously on different subjects and learn the core ideas from them. But in this post i am using it instead of books, mistakes of others and learn from them.

Charlie Munger said :
"All I want to know is where i am going to die, so i will never go there."

This beautiful and thoughtful advise can apply in every part of life, business, market, job etc.

The below are some mistakes from my investing journey and may help you for your investing journey:

1: Don't borrow money from anyone and invest in market, at the end you will in loss only.
2: Don't invest on anyone else suggestion or  tips, you should do your own analysis and get conviction then only invest. If you don't have knowledge about the market and investing then first educate yourself.
3: Don't invest in any bad business like lots of debt in the books, very high P/E(Overvalued).
4: Don't invest on any stock if you don't understand the underling business of the organization.
5: In stock market, there is nothing certain, so be cautious and don't be overconfident that you only get profits, you may get loss as well, so prepare yourself emotionally.
6: Don't make your portfolio so big that you can not properly monitor it.
7: Stay away from IPO's but if still you want to invest in IPO then first do a thorough analysis of the IPO.
8: Don't Invest in any stock which is out of your "Circle of Competence".
9: Invest only that money in the market that you don't need in near future i.e 5 years and be ready if the investment become zero then also it will not harm you.
10: Don't Overpay for any business whatever good or attractive the business is.
11: Don't sell your winners early, let it compound with time.
12: Don't hold losers and don't average bad stocks.
13: Don't just learn from your mistakes, learn from other's as well.
14: Don't envy because others are making money in the market.
15: If you are investing in market and want to take wise decisions then don't waste your time, Read..Read.Read and Read a lot.

You can start your reading journey with the below books, Buy from the below link and start your journey:

Chalk n Duster- thought on education

Hello readers,

As the blog name TherandomWisdom, any wisdom or knowledge that i accumulate in my life, i will share that wisdom on the blog.

Malcolm X a human rights activist, said-

"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today."

Today i am going to share the wisdom learned from the movie : CHALK N DUSTER

Now a days, very few good quality movies are produced because these kind of movies will not attract viewer and money, but on the other side, this kind of movies are the real mirror of our system and society.

The movie "CHALK N DUSTER" is also a mirror image of our education system.

People forget their teachers and move on in their life and only think about their career and growth. Our entire system is like that, now a days a new trend started-people only think for the growth, money and career, no place for morals, ethics, love, emotions etc.

This movie is based on the life and events of two teachers and education system. This movie give's us some points to think:

1: The old is gold: The older the teacher, the more knowledge(Experience ) he/she have. He might not be as updated with technology as you are or the new generation is, but still he have the best knowledge of his subject, experience of years. He have the capability to make you a good human being.

"The best teachers are those who show you where to look but don't tell you what to see."

2: Question on the current education system: The movie raises questions on the current education system. The modern and only  business minded businessman, made the education sector as a business for their profit and each parent is their customer, thinking for the better future of their kids.

3: Education as a Business: In the movie Mr. Jacky Shroff said a good point -

"Let the Education be Education, don't make it a business".
but in current scenario just opposite is happening. People are just doing business of education.

Plot of the movie :

CHALK N DUSTER is journey of two teachers Vidya ( Shabana Azmi) & Jyoti ( Juhi Chawla) , serving at a Mumbai - based High School. Their passion and love for teaching, bonds them in a special relationship with their students. Their gratification is good grades, moral values they strive to impart to students. However, in an evil turn of events, a wicked lady, Kamini Gupta ( Divya Dutta) gets appointed as the School Principal, who earlier worked in the capacity of a Supervisor. She is extremely cunning by nature and monopolizes on every opportunity she can find her hands on. In a bid to make profits for the school, she decides to fire experienced teachers to replace them with fresher teachers. The saved funds of which she can boastfully present to the school trustees, at the cost of quality education. Vidya suffers a sudden heart attack due to her dismissal from school. The school management threatens the staff to cut ties with Vidya. At such a time, Jyoti stands up for her friend and colleague, Vidya. Together they fight to earn their respect and credibility as teachers and unite against prejudices set by the management.

There are many such thoughts come every day but no one is taking any step. Being a parent, i worry a lot, how i/we take care of our children and how they will grow their kids.

think about this....

Have a nice day and keep learning!

Daily Routine that can change your life

“The Secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.” –Mike Murdock

“If you don’t want the(to) change, nothing will change.”

Every human being have some routine. But how effective is the routine that matters most. We should cultivate a healthy and productive daily routine to yourself. There are some daily routine suggestions below, one can opt as per his suitability.

1.      Start your day Early:
I get up early so I can do exercise, read and do meditation. This gets me energy for the day, knowledge for the life and work. Plus, it allows me to complete my work earlier.
By waking up early, I can get a lot of time for myself, family & friends.

2.     Meditate and Exercise:
Joseph Addison said “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”. Have a 60-min time for exercise and meditate daily.

3.     Set an Auto-Pilot routine:
Plan ahead for the next day. What to wear for the next day, where to go, what to eat, what to read and what work to accomplish. You should have some daily activates on auto pilot mode like what to wear, what for breakfast, exercise etc.

4.     Prepare A Plan:
“if you don’t know where you’re going, it doesn’t matter which road you take.” - The Cheshire Cat (Alice in wonderland)

Every day you should plan what you need to accomplish the next day. This way, when you reach your desk the next morning, you know where you are going. I plan for the day, I plan the goals for the month and the year then I will start in small steps and accomplish the planned target. It is awesome and you can observe that the life starts changing.

For FY 2017,
-         I planned to read 15 book and I am on my way and completed 11 Books as of today,
-         I planned to start writing a blog and here we are today, writing my 5th post on the blog.
-         I planned to learn a new technology and I am on my path to learn.

As Roy T. Bennett said, “Life is short. Focus on what really matters.”

What are the core activities you must accomplish or your job falls apart? Most of the things you do during the day are tasks which could be left unattended for a while. But there are certain things that are must-dos. Figure those out and do them before you tackle the less important tasks, like checking email and making phone calls.

In the Book Rich Dad, Poor Dad, Robert Kiyosaki said: “first serve to yourself”. The author explained this in many aspects like savings, investments, love etc.

So, Plan advance and start completing the planned task one by one, in that way you will get a goal oriented day and life.
Prepare your checklist for the day and life.
Write your plan on a paper or on a board (A place where you can see it, it will poke you throughout the day).

As I have posted in another post ‘Little things make a huge difference’. This small daily habits will change your life amazingly.
The compound interest principle applies here as well. Every habit will compound for your good future.
5.     Stop wasting time:
In a day, we waste a lot of time on unproductive things like Facebook, Whats App, TV etc. Analyze your uses of this unproductive tools and calculate the time wasted on this thing and calculate the time for the month and year then you can understand the amount of time you waste on this unproductive tasks.
I am not trying to stop to use this tools, I am just trying to say use but with caution because you are buying the pleasure of using this tools against most costlier currency of the universe “Time”.
6.     Leave work and tension in office:
When you come home from work, make sure that you leave you work and tensions in office only because home is for family ad yourself only, no work and related tension in home. Give time to yourself and your loved one. Someone said: “Work is a never-ending process”.
7.     show gratitude:
The law of attraction says that “the more you show gratitude toward the things the more it will prosper in your life.” The law is applied to each phase of your life whether it will be love, money, success etc. So, show your gratitude to each one whoever helped you in any phase of your life. Make a daily routine of prayer to the almighty god and show your gratitude to him for the life, family etc.
8.     Get enough sleep:
Henny Youngman said “If you are going to do something tonight that you will be sorry for tomorrow morning, sleep let.”
Sleep is the part of the day when our body and mind recover from the entire day stress, work and fatigueless. So, Have a 7 hour of pleasant sleep every night and sleep on time. The lady nature has designed the night for sleep and day for work, so don’t go against the nature.
There are many daily rituals you can opt for yourself. Give it a thought. If you plan on doing something, stick to it every single day.
Benjamin franklin daily routine from the book “Daily Rituals”:

Please provide your suggestion to improve the quality of the blog and keep learning and keep improving your life.

You can read about daily rituals of great minds in the world from the below books:

Mobile Addicts

Every single person today is addicted to mobile phones, the little ones are ruining their lives because of mobiles.

Albert Einstein said:

“I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.”

Why mobiles are called cell phones?

People are prisoners of their phones, that’s why they are called cell phones. What we do entire day with the mobiles-Whats App, Facebook, and YouTube etc.

Mobile phones make you closer to someone who is very far from you but it makes you away from the person who is near to you.

Every technology innovation some benefits and some drawbacks. Mobile have benefits that you can connect anyone, anywhere, anytime. You can learn or get knowledge on anything, anywhere, anytime. There are many more but with advantages, there are some disadvantages as well.
Some disadvantages are:

1: People use mobiles while driving, that may lead t accidents.
2: People are addicted so much to mobiles, so they use it when they are with family, loves once. This increases the distance between you and your loved once and create relationship problems.
3: People spend so much time on mobiles, that may increase the health problem, eye problem. It may increase the muscle and nerve problem in your hand and finger.
4: The mobile will help you to improve your virtual friend counts but it will decrease your physical friends.

Professor Sanjay Bakshi called the mobiles as “Weapons of mass destruction”.

Mobiles cause many problems with education, especially for children. It is difficult for students to concentrate in class since the phones enable students to chat, play games, watch videos and surf the Internet.

At current time, it is must to have a smartphone but we have to learn and teach our kids, the proper use of smartphones. There is a lot of knowledge outside there, so use your mobile to learn that knowledge, learn new skills.

The most important, the less you use(Unnecessary use) mobiles, the more time you will have and the more time you will invest in productive things like reading, Learning, your occupation(Work), family, health etc.

So be aware of the time you spend because the time is the only thing that will not come back once passed.

Thanks,

Mahesh

Love your parents

“LOVE YOUR PARENTS. WE ARE SO BUSY GROWING UP, WE OFTEN FORGET THEY ARE ALSO GROWING OLD.”

Human Life Cycle:

Birthà ChildhoodàAdolescenceàAdulthoodà Old ageà Death

Why I am discussing the human life cycle here, as for life cycle there must be an origin. In human case, the origin is the parents.

We get birth, that’s a blessing for us and our parents, they love us, they care us, they sacrifice everything for our happiness. They take care of us when we are infant, Toddler, Preschooler, Primary school boy, Teenager, Adult and care for us till there end of life but what we do for them in return.
Till Adult age, we are dependent on them, once we start our own earning, we start thinking only about ourselves, our career, our family only. But what about them, as we grow in our life, they are moving towards the end of their life (the human life cycle-Old age) – Think of it.

The below picture better explain that what parents do for their kids:

We must understand our parents, love them and care them.  Remember, one day, you will be in their position.

“Love your parents and treat them with loving care. For you will only know their value when you see their empty chairs.”

Guys- Be sure to spend time with your parents whenever you can. Because one day, when you look up from your busy life, they won’t be there anymore and then you realize that what you have lost. So, use this time wisely.

Thanks,
Mahesh

Small improvement or deterioration makes Big Difference

Small improvement or deterioration makes Big Difference

Though it includes some text, it simply denotes what 1% of improvement or deterioration can do to us within a span of 365 days.

We in the age range of 18 to 40 call yourself young. And what most of the young people do with their 24 hours in a day, that decides their future.

A normal young guy’s routing is like waking up around 8AM, have tea, office then back to home, watch TV or movie, mobile, Facebook, WhatsApp, chitchat and sleep around 1PM.
What we are missing here: Reading, Learning, Health, Saving, Investing, Knowledge, Family etc. We are losing the most precious element: Time

Why I am talking here this all, I am trying to bring the attention to the small Changes or habits, if we change, we can achieve a lot.

As the picture shows a small fraction change 1% makes the 1.01 to 37.8 in 365 days with compounding. And the same time (365 days) with 0.99 makes it to 0.03.

This is a big difference with only small number 1%.

Now let apply the same formula to our daily habits, Routines:

1: For the people who don’t read, let see just start reading only 5 page per day. Check the calculation below:

Day
Page
Time
Total Pages
1 Day
5
10min
5 pages
7 Days
5
10 min
35 pages
30 Days
5
10 min
150 pages
365 Days
5
10 min
1825 pages

So 1825 page = 6-7 book on an average 300 pages each book
Time spent: 3650/60=60.83 hr=2.53 day
So, with a 10 min reading daily will bring us the knowledge of 6-7 books, that will be a research of 5-10 years.

If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.

By voracious reading we can learn lot of things from the great minds of the world.
